Basic Chemicals Business Sector

Methanol, Basic Chemicals Division I, Life Science Division, Energy Resources & Environmental Business Division

From the production of methanol and other products, to the development of resources -
making the most of natural gas

Starting with the development of natural gas resources, we are developing a wide range of businesses such as methanol, ammonia, and organic chemicals that are derivatives of methanol and ammonia. Overseas, we are actively developing methanol joint venture business and sales businesses, while in Japan, we are undertaking new development and sales expansion of Life Science businesses and strengthening the methylamines and MMA downstream businesses.

Drawing on proprietary technologies
to offer products that excel in originality

We offer products with unique properties based on our superacid catalyst technology. In the specialty chemicals business, which is centered on meta-xylene derivatives, we seek to reinforce business foundations by differentiating our products through enhancement of our product lineup and technical services and by developing new business and expanding overseas business. Our commodity chemicals business, by meeting the changing demands of the market , serves as a firm foundation for our production chain.
Looking ahead to tomorrow’s needs, we develop new products and implement patent strategies to build long-term growth paths centered on our proprietary technologies. By integrating the technical and marketing skills of with our affiliates, we will continue to introduce differentiated products to the market quickly and efficiently.

Methanol Division

We manufacture methanol from natural gas—which has been drawing attention as a global environment-friendly energy source—and are creating various other derivatives using original technology.
Our main product, methanol, has raised global expectations as an earth-friendly energy source and as a hydrogen carrier likely to spread in the future.

Our main products include m-xylenediamine, which is used as a raw material for coating compounds and adhesive agents. MX Nylon ,  which is highly evaluated as a material for automotive components and food packaging, is being used in many countries as an oxygen gas barrier resin that protects food from oxidation.
Aromatic aldehydes are used as raw materials for perfumes and plastic additives.

Basic Chemicals Division I

We are actively undertaking environmental countermeasures such as adopting a manufacturing process using original technology that does not produce ammonium sulfate in the production of methyl methacrylate.
Applications for products using these derivatives are raw materials for plastics, coating resins, synthetic fibers, adhesive agents, artificial leather, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural chemicals—products that support our daily lives.

Basic Chemicals Division II

Using our unique superacid catalyst technology, we make xylene isomers and derivatives from mixed xylene.
Our products are used as raw materials and additives for fibers, polymers and coating compounds which are indispensable to our daily lives and industries. Our xylene separation technology using the superacid catalyst is unique technology, and it enables the efficient separation of mixed xylenes obtained from the petroleum refining into m-xylene, p-xylene, o-xylene, and ethylbenzene. Using xylene isomers produced efficiently by applying these technologies, we manufacture derivative products together with MGC affiliates. From o-xylene, we manufacture phthalic anhydride, a raw material for unsaturated polyester, coating resins, and plasticizers, and from m-xylene, we manufacture our high-purity isophthalic acid, demand for which is growing as a secondary raw material for PET resins, as well as the derivatives produced with our unique technology.
The main use of formalin is phenolic resin adhesive used in the production of plywood. Plywood is widely used in the floors, walls, and furniture of houses and buildings, and is a basic material that is closely related to our daily life. As the largest domestic supplier, we support our daily lives invisibly.
Polyols are used in solvent-free products such as powder coating polyester resins and waterborne polyester resins. Polyols contribute to the realization of an environmentally friendly society.

Energy Resources & Environmental Business Division

The company was the first in Japan to succeed in synthesizing methanol (1952) and ammonia (1957) from the rich deposits of natural gas that exist underground in Niigata Prefecture.
Since then, the Energy Resources & Environmental Business Division has been conducted in the exploration and development of crude oil and natural gas in collaboration with other resource development companies, in parallel with our own natural gas development business for about 60 years. In addition, we have participated in geothermal development, LNG-fired power generation projects, and CCS (Carbon-dioxide Capture and Storage) business consideration with which we have an affinity.
In Niigata Prefecture, we conducted in the exploration and development of natural gas and crude oil for supply to our Niigata plant and other purposes, and in the separation of iodine from groundwater pumped up during the extraction of natural gas dissolved in water, and also carbon-neutral business consideration focusing on CCS (Carbon-dioxide Capture and Storage). In Akita and Iwate Prefectures, we conduct in a geothermal power project, and we are also promoting electric power businesses by participating in an LNG-fired power generation project in Fukushima Prefecture, a biomass power project in Hokkaido.

Life Science Division

The Life Science Division was established in 2016 with the aim of broadening our business in high value-added fields. The business is focusing on two main business lines—developing health food ingredients and providing contract manufacturing of antibody drugs.
We are focusing efforts on pyrroloquinoline (PQQ), a vitamin-like substance as key health food ingredient. It has been approved as a health food ingredient in the U.S. and has been selling well as a supplement. It also received approval from the European Commission as a “novel food” under the region’s new food safety regulations. In the contract manufacturing business for antibody drugs, we established Cultivecs in 2016, a joint venture with Nippon Kayaku, which has a proven track record in anticancer drugs and follow-on biologics, and launched the antibody drug contract manufacturing business.
