MGC Achieves ISCC PLUS Certification for Meta-xylene and MXDA

September 5, 2024

Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc. (MGC; Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Masashi Fujii) announces that it has acquired ISCC PLUS certification1 for Meta-xylene and Meta-xylenediamine (MXDA) produced at MGC's Mizushima Plant. With this certification, MGC would be able to start manufacturing and selling ISCC PLUS-certified Meta-xylene and MXDA, which is manufactured from sustainable raw materials based on the mass balance approach2.

Meta-xylene is used as a raw material for agrochemicals and a number of MGC’s products, including MXDA and purified isophthalic acid. MXDA is a raw material for coatings and adhesives—due to its excellent corrosion and chemical resistance—as well as for Nylon-MXD6, which is known for its excellent gas barrier properties. Meanwhile, purified isophthalic acid is used as a secondary raw material for the modification of polyester.
MGC is considering receiving the supply of sustainable raw materials based on the mass balance approach from ENEOS Corporation3 (ENEOS).

Based on the Group's mission of “Creating value to share with society”, MGC will continue to contribute to the realization of a sustainable society through the environmental initiatives of its Meta-xylene business.

1:  ISCC PLUS Certification, developed by ISCC (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification), is an international certification that ensures and manages the sustainability of raw materials in the global supply chain.

2:  The mass balance approach is a method of assigning a measure of sustainability to a product when it has been manufactured using both sustainable raw materials (e.g., biomass-derived raw materials) and non-sustainable raw materials (e.g., petroleum-derived raw materials). The measure is assigned according to the amount of sustainable raw material input.

3:  MGC and ENEOS manufacture paraxylene at their joint venture, Mizushima Paraxylene Co., in which ENEOS has a 51% stake and MGC has 49%.

MGC’s Mizushima Plant hereby pledges that it is compliant with the ISCC PLUS requirements in accordance with the latest ISCC regulations.
