TRE HOLDINGS and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical to Study Feasibility of Using Woody Biomass and Waste to Produce and Sell Green Methanol Commercially in Japan
TRE HOLDINGS CORPORATION (TRE; Head Office: Chiyoda-Ku, Tokyo; President and COO: Mitsuo Abe) and Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc. (MGC; Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Yoshinori Isahaya) announced today that they have signed a memorandum of understanding for a strategic business collaboration in which they will study the feasibility of using domestic woody biomass and waste to produce green methanol commercially in Japan. The two companies will leverage their respective expertise and know-how to pursue the commercial-scale production of green methanol by first conducting a feasibility study at a plant to be built in Chiba Prefecture, Japan.
As the world focuses on realizing a sustainable, carbon-neutral global society, the chemical and fuel manufacturing industries have become increasingly interested in using woody biomass and waste to produce products such as methanol, an essential raw material widely used in plastics, adhesives and fuels. In particular, green methanol can be produced from biomass and waste, making it an environmentally friendly alternative.
TRE is engaged in waste and resource recycling, renewable energy and related businesses. As WX (waste transformation) environmental company, TRE strives to transform waste and used products that have conventionally been difficult to process into recycled resources by overcoming technological and economic challenges. Under this new initiative, TRE will procure woody resources and waste plastics and then process them to supply the raw materials to MGC for methanol production. Woody resources will be procured in collaboration with the Chiba Prefecture Forestry Cooperative to ensure a stable supply in accordance with local forestry management plans.
MGC is contributing to a more recycling-oriented world through CarbopathTM, a sustainable environmental-recycling platform and value chain that uses CO2, biomass and waste to produce and supply methanol-based fuel and materials. Under the new initiative, MGC will produce and sell green methanol using synthetic gas derived from woody biomass and waste materials supplied by TRE. The commercial sale of green methanol is expected to contribute to Japan's carbon neutrality by supplying green raw materials to domestic industries and providing domestically produced carbon-neutral marine fuels.
TRE and MGC look forward to pursuing innovative solutions to future challenges, promoting regional revitalization and creating environmental, societal and economic value for the realization of a more sustainable world.
