Notice about market development by prepreg products in the U.S. Composite Materials Market

June 4, 2021

Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc. (MGC; Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Masashi Fujii) has decided to launch market development in the U.S. advanced composite materials business by introducing thermosetting resin prepreg(*) products.

Carbon fiber composite materials and other advanced composite materials are expected to contribute to the realization of an affluent and sustainable society in terms of their functions and weight reduction. On the other hand, carbon fiber composites have been facing the challenges of low-temperature transportation and frozen storage, and the necessity of degassing by autoclaving during the curing process.

The thermosetting resin prepreg products we have developed this time can be stored at room temperature, have excellent gas permeability in the z-direction(transverse) of prepreg, and also possess the mechanical and dielectric properties required for aerospace and urban air mobility applications. These features enable cost reduction in transportation, storage, and curing processes.

At the same time, “NEXX Technologies Advanced Materials Business Unit” will be established in MITSUBISHI GAS CHEMICAL AMERICA, INC (Head office: New York, U.S.A.), one of our subsidiaries, to develop the market in the U.S., where is expected to be one of the major regions for the industry.

We have been providing a wide range of solutions for chemicals and functional materials. We will continue to offer advanced composite materials to all customers and market segments around the world.

(*) Prepreg: An intermediate material in which a sheet of carbon fiber is pre-impregnated with resin.
