Q. Do you accept applications submitted directly by students?
A. No. We accept applications through recommendations from the following referring universities. Contact your university’s scholarship office:
The University of Tokyo, Institute of Science Tokyo, Tokyo University of Science, Keio University, Waseda University, Tohoku University, University of Tsukuba, Kyoto University, and Osaka University
Q. Do you provide scholarships to students from any Asian country?
A. We provide scholarships to students from the following 10 ASEAN countries:
Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Singapore, Philippines, Brunei, Vietnam, Malaysia, Myanmar, and Laos
Q. Are the scholarships restricted to specific majors?
A. We provide scholarships to students enrolled in bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral programs majoring in fields such as chemistry and chemical engineering (including undergraduates interested in and graduate students engaged in research from a chemical approach, regardless of their faculty or department).
Contact your university’s scholarship office to ask whether your major qualifies.
Q. Where can I get the application documents?
A. Get them at your university’s scholarship office.
Complete the application documents yourself, entirely in Japanese. Also note that the interviews for the second screening will be conducted in Japanese.
Q. Can I submit the application documents in person (myself)?
A. No. Submit the application documents through your university’s scholarship office.
Q. How do you screen applicants?
A. Screening is based on the application documents submitted and interviews. First screening: Review of documents
Second screening: Interviews conducted by the screening committee
Q. How much is the scholarship?
A. The scholarship pays 150,000 yen/month for a bachelor’s program, 180,000 yen/month for a master’s program, and 200,000 yen/month for a doctoral program.
Q. When will scholarship payments begin?
A. For spring recruitment, scholarship recipients are decided around the end of June, and payments begin in April.
For autumn recruitment, scholarship recipients are decided around the end of November, and payments begin in October.
Q. Will I have to repay the scholarship?
A. No. The scholarships provided by the Foundation do not require repayment.
Q. Do the scholarships create any obligations to the founder, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company?
A. No. There are no obligations to Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company.
Q. Can I apply if I am receiving another scholarship?
A. No. You cannot apply if you are receiving a scholarship or similar support from another institution. Check with your university’s scholarship office for details.
Q. Are there any restrictions on visa status?
A. You must have a College Student visa. Submit a copy of a document certifying your visa status as one of the application documents.
Q. Can I apply before entering a university?
A. Yes. You can apply through the university’s scholarship office.
Q. What happens if I repeat a year of university?
A. Scholarship payments will end unless there are special reasons.
